The Squirt: Quaint and Historic with Great Italian Food
Must Eats: French Onion Soup
La Taverna Restaurant and Bar is located in Dayton, New Jersey. It was recommended by our friend, Linda T. many times and we finally had the opportunity to try it. Their building used to be a private home a while back and dates back to the 1700′s. We like the atmosphere because it is quaint and has a historic feel to it. They do have a great menu filled with Italian dishes and specials. One can choose from many appetizers, salads, meat and seafood entrees and pasta dishes.
Our server du jour was Roxanne. We sensed her warmth from the start and knew right away we were in for a fun evening. It was late and we were beat after attending a function earlier in the evening, so Roxanne was a great server to have.
For appetizers, we ordered the Fried Calamari, which was really terrific. The serving was very sizable and the taste was great. The appetizer, however, that REALLY warmed our hearts was the French Onion Soup. Our eyes really lit up when Roxanne brought it over to us. The size of the crock was huge – just the right size for us! Oh wow this soup was delicious! The cheese on top had the perfect amount of toastiness and cascaded over the sides of the bowl. There were plenty of succulent onions and just the right dose of bread to add some body. The French Onion soup is definitely a Must Eat.
For dinner, we ordered one of the specials of the day. It was a chicken dish consisting of fresh mozzarella, spinach, and sliced fresh tomato sandwiched between two BIG chicken breasts on top of a bed of asparagus with a delicate wine sauce drizzled on top. The chicken was moist and tender and the sauce was the perfect topping. It was really awesome. The chicken came with roasted potatoes, which were quite tasty.
Our experience at La Taverna was a great one. Roxanne was terrific and made us feel as though we had known her for years. She even brought the chef and owners out and introduced them to us. You could definitely see how proud they all are to work at La Taverna. Thank our friend, Linda T. for recommending that we try out La Taverna. You were right on, Linda.
