The Squirt: Relaxing Atmosphere and Great Combination of Ethnicities – Hungarian & German
Must Eats: Chicken Paprikas with Hungarian Dumplings
Ren and I had a great dinner at Lokal, a little Hungarian – German restaurant in downtown Sonoma, right near the town square. It was a tasteful small restaurant, with nice colors and a friendly staff. A bonus was that it was not crowded the night we went, which enhanced the relaxing experience for us. Our server for the evening was Alison, who was cordial and very accommodating. She never rushed us and was really cool with us asking a lot of questions about the menu and bringing us sharing plates.
To start our adventure to Hungary and Germany, we ordered a Gundlach Bundschu, 2009 Gewürztraminer wine from a local Sonoma winery to enjoy with our meal. It really had a fresh flare to it and was refreshing to boot. Next up, we ordered two appetizers to share. The first appetizer was the Tivoli Two Dog Dipper, which was basically a beef frank and a German Nuernberger with no bun and a mustard sauce and ketchup for dipping. We always really enjoy all types of sausages, so this was a great appetizer for us. It was easy to gobble these dogs down in no time, because they were so good!
Our second appetizer was Spaetzle and Cheese (with bacon). This was really delicious. Spaetzle is basically German flour dumplings, and we ordered them with crumbled bacon. The taste was similar to macaroni and cheese because of the cheese factor. The flavor and texture were right on target. Real comfort food for sure!
We ordered two entrees to share between us – one Hungarian entree and one German one. Our Hungarian entree was our favorite out of the two of them – Chicken Paprikas with Hungarian Dumplings. Oh man! The flavor of this dish was awesome. There was even a nice healthy dollop of sour cream right on top of the dish. Yummy! Sour cream is always one of my favorite things in the world. I even like to put sour cream on pizza. Yes- on Pizza! Don’t knock it until you try it….and Yes, you just might like it. The chicken was so moist and tender and the dumplings were wonderful. This dish is a Must Eat for sure.
Our German entree was the Hamburg Platter. It usually comes with German potato salad but we ordered it with more spaetzle instead of potato salad. There were three kinds of delicious sausages: Smoked Chicken Sausage, Nuernberger & Swiss Bochwurst. All of them were excellent. They also came with a really tasty sauerkraut. I actually couldn’t get enough of the sauerkraut, and it was not even sour at all.
Our dinner at Lokal was really a great experience. Having German and Hungarian food together in one meal was terrific. Our server, Alison, was refreshing, friendly and attentive. After eating at Lokal, you are right near the town square so you can walk around and walk off your meal. There are plenty of shops and other establishments to explore.
