Must Eats: “Twice Cooked” Cuban Steak
Downtown Freehold sure has changed a lot since it was first incorporated over 300 hundred years ago on October 31, 1693! Downtown Freehold has maintained it’s historic feel, but has added a modern flare and become a nighttime gathering spot including a few trendy & traditional restaurants. Metropolitan Cafe is one of those, that manages to combine the comfort of a traditional American bistro with a hip, sophisticated flare. We were wowed by some of the Pacific Rim & Latin flavors bursting in the food that comforted us so nicely the evening we visited the Metropolitan Cafe!
As this was our first time dining in downtown Freehold, one thing we didn’t expect, was the parking situation. As we said, the downtown area has become a gathering spot, and we were there on a Saturday night, so we spent quite some time looking for a parking spot. Although we arrived a few minutes late, we were seated right away. The friendly hostess let us know that they actually have complimentary valet out back. They validate your ticket for you. We will definitely use that next time, and we highly recommend you do as well! It was also their first night on Open Table, which we had used to make our reservation! (Don’t forget you can too, using our handy link!)
Once we were seated, our friendly server, Jennifer greeted us. After ordering some delicious Grey Goose Martinis, that even came in cute little mini shakers, that Jennifer shook right at the table, Jennifer brought over a little basket of rolls. They came with two accompaniments, that both had a tasty surprise. The first one looked like your average butter, but this butter was magical maple butter, and we couldn’t get enough of it! We were unsure of what the second accompaniment was, but it was a red, creamy delight. Jennifer was happy to inform us that it was actually roasted red pepper hummus! There wasn’t any of that left, when we were done with it! Needless to say, we already knew we were in for a special meal, after those special treats!
We were starving that day, and couldn’t wait to order an appetizer. We decided on the Sweet ‘N Spicy Calamari & Shrimp. It was tossed in a sweet & spicy garlic sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds. In addition to being so incredibly yummy & delicious, the presentation was so cute. It was presented on a plate with a Chinese food take-out container, on it’s side, with the calamari & shrimp spilling out, as if someone knocked it over onto the plate, and then into our mouths! Lol
As we usually do, we shared two entrees, so we could both enjoy these bursting flavors and share them with you! First up, was the Certified Angus New York Strip. Is was served with a scrumptious scoop of mashed potatoes and some tender sauteed spinach. The steak itself was piled high with melting herb-infused butter. This steak just melted right in our mouths, butter & all! Wow!
Next up, was the Must Eat of this review: The “Twice Cooked” Cuban Steak. This amazing skirt steak was char grilled and then wok seared with the most delicious seasonings! The unique combination of Latin & Asian flavors on the steak were outstanding! The steak itself was tender & soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, every bite bursting with Latin & Asian flare! Adding to the Latin flavors of the steak, were the yummy sides, black beans, arroz verde (also known as green rice) and some tomato salsa! It was all so delicious, it soared right to the top of our must eats for this review!
All in all, we had a wonderful time at the Metropolitan Cafe. Jennifer was so nice and knowledgeable on the menu, and helped us make some delicious choices. If you find yourself in downtown Freehold, and are looking for a delicious meal with modern, Latin, Asian flare, we highly recommend you check out Metropolitan Cafe.
