The Squirt: Delicious and Upscale Asian Food
Must Eats: Rock Shrimp, Oishi Gopdol, Pad Thai Noodles
Prices: Moderate (BYOB)
The other day, Ren and I dined at Oishi in Newtown, PA. They serve Japanese, Korean and Thai cuisine. We had heard rave reviews about Oishi from our friends who have dined there before, so we decided to give it a TwoSquirts try. It was definitely a hit with us. The fact that it is a BYOB establishment, allows you to enjoy a really tasty meal and bring your own favorite libation.
When you enter Oishi, you are immediately taken by the atmosphere. It is very upscale and chic. They have a lot of stimulating decorations to gaze at and the service is very professional and attentive.
Our server for the evening was Jessica. She was very friendly and was happy to offer suggestions of her favorites and even followed up to see if we liked them. The only recommendation for her would be to pace our courses a bit better, as we were inundated with a few at the same time.
The menu of Oishi provides something for everyone. There is a vast array of soups, both semi cooked and raw salads, appetizers and entrees. There is a large selection of sushi and sashimi selections as well as entrees from the grill, rice and noodle dishes and fried dishes. You will not leave Oishi hungry with this large selection to choose from.
Ren and I decided to try several things, being that we had never been there before and the fact that we were down right starving. LOL. We started with Miso soup for each of us which was tasty and not overly salty, which was a plus with us. We also ordered steamed Edamame which is always a hit with us. Our other appetizer was Rock Shrimp, which was yummy fried shrimp in a spicy Korean chili sauce. It was perfectly prepared and the sauce was wonderful. It was not too spicy either.
Our first dinner entree was the Oishi Gopdol a very unique and delicious dish for sure. They brought a hot stone pot containing marinated vegetables, on a bed of rice with a fried egg with a spicy cause for dipping. Ours also contained chicken. You have a choice of chicken, beef, seafood, mushroom or sashimi. The pot is sizzling and continues to sizzle as it sits. That actually makes the rice very crispy as it sizzles, so if you like crunchy rice, like we do, its awesome. If you don’t, we suggest you empty the pot out as fast as you can! We would definitely order this dish again.
We also ordered Pad Thai noodles with chicken. which contained vegetables, ground peanuts and bean sprouts. We really enjoyed the noodles a lot. They were really delicate and bursting with flavor. They were fantastic and we would really love to try all of the available options (vegetable, chicken, beef, shrimp, and combination). Oh man they were good!
Last but not least, we ordered the Sashimi Deluxe platter. We always order without octopus, being that I am not a fan of it. I really don’t know if it comes with it at Oishi, but I always say, “No octopus, please.”. One thing that I must point out is that their raw fish is very fresh. Each piece was fresh with no fishy smell or taste. That is definitely important to a sushi/sashimi lover. It really was great and we were served many pieces. Excellent, Oishi!
We really had a fantastic meal at Oishi. Our server was friendly and very patient with us, as it took us a while to make up our minds. The atmosphere is indeed very upscale, and it feels as if you are in NYC. The food was wonderful and we have been craving it ever since.
We really recommend Oishi for delicious Asian food. Our friends were right when they steered us towards Oishi.
Thank you, friends.
