The Squirt: Scrumptious Chinese Food in a Homey Historic Building
Must Eats: Fried Rice, Wok Seared Beef
Prices: Moderate (BYOB)
Duck Sauce is an awesome Asian restaurant located on South State Street in Newtown, Pennsylvania. It is located within the historic Whitehall building which was originally a hotel from 1843 to 1979. During the early 80′s is almost burned to the ground but it reopened in 1983 after being extensively renovated. There are a few other establishments within the same building and we will be posting a review shortly for another one that is famous for breakfasts.
Now back to Duck Sauce. Upon entering the restaurant, you sense its homeyness and coziness. We have been there several times, and each time we have, we have been promptly greeted and served. One can also see how popular Duck Sauce is with the locals, because there is always plenty of patrons there dining on their delicacies. There must also be a lot of take out orders, as evident by the amount of to go bags on the counter during the evening.
There are basically two dining rooms in Duck Sauce, one being in the rear and housing a large hand-blown multicolor glass chandelier. When you go to Duck Sauce, be sure to check it out. The menu is extensive, containing a large selection of soups, salads, appetizers and entrees. It also has a large selection of Asian fusion items which we will try out next time.
Tonight, we were served by Angel and really had a great time talking with her. She really made us feel like we were right at home. We have also had two other great servers during our other visits, Bill and Raymond. Every one that we have had is very professional and knows how to take care of someone.
Tonight, the three of us decided to order the Steamed Pork Dumplings as an appetizer along with a very nice order of Chinese Spare Ribs. The dumplings are really delicious and have just the right thickness of dough. The dipping sauce is also very tasty. The spare ribs are all very large with a lot of meat to eat. The taste is perfect…and not too sweet either.
For dinner we ordered Fried Rice with Chicken. They also offer shrimp, beef and pork as additions to the rice. We have ordered shrimp and pork as well as chicken and they are all fantastic. Their chicken, really has a very fresh taste to it and is extremely tender. Their fried rice is wonderful. This time, we didn’t even take any home.
For dinner, we ordered our favorite, the Wok Seared Beef, that Bill had recommended to us the first time we were ever there. We have ordered it every time since. It is basically thinly sliced beef, quickly seared in a wok to give it a very distinct crispiness and tossed with a garlic and spice sauce. It is mounded into a tidy little pile on top of fresh baby spinach. The beef is also topped with very thin crispy onion straws. The beef is truly very delicious. The texture is divine. We like to wilt the spinach by soaking it with the sauce and beef. Then you can really appreciate the spinach. We really eat up every bite of the Wok Seared Beef. T hanks to Bill for starting us on it.
We also ordered Pepper Steak with Onions, which is self explanatory of what it contains, but it really is delicious as well. The meat at Duck Sauce has tender written all over it. Other entrees that we have had in the past are, Chicken with Sting Beans and Garlic Chicken. Everything is good there and one can really have an enjoyable experience.
To sum it up, we had another terrific time at Duck Sauce. The food was delicious as always, the peacefulness of the restaurant, really added to our experience as well. Thank you, Angel for making us feel right at home and for laughing with us. It was a lot of fun!
