Pat's Colonial Kitchen, Newtown, PA

Pat's Colonial Kitchen, Newtown, PA

Pat’s Colonial Kitchen is a really exceptional little restaurant located on South State Street in Newtown, Pennsylvania.  It is located within the historic Whitehall building which was originally a hotel from 1843 to 1979.  During the early 80′s is almost burned to the ground but it reopened in 1983 after being extensively renovated.  Pat’s is family owned and has a feeling like you have stepped right into someone’s home. There are plenty of smiling faces and colonial decorations on the walls. There are also a good amount of signs on the wall that promote good energy. They are open 7 days a week for breakfast and dinner only. Before we went there for the first time last year, we had heard so many people from miles around, raving about Pat’s for their delicious breakfast. Needless to say, we tried it back then and have kept going back ever since. One thing to remember is that Pat’s is only open from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm every day. But they do serve both breakfast and lunch during those hours.

Hello TwoSquirts Fans!  If you are new to our blog, then Welcome!  We hope you enjoy, and stick around!  If you are a loyal reader, then welcome back, you are in for another mouth-watering TwoSquirts review, from your fav foodies, Roy & Ren! :)

Well, once again, we have found ourselves in historic Newtown, PA! We have been drawn to the town recently, and one of the reasons is most certainly the food! ;)   This time we are in yet another historic building.  According to the sign, the Black Horse Tavern was built in 1747.  We couldn’t find anything on the history of the building for you, and we are sure it has housed many fine establishments since 1747, but apparently, it has been the Black Horse Tavern since April 2010!  There is a historic feel both on the outside and the inside, but the food is certainly modern and delicious!

The Saloon, Newtown, PA

The Saloon, Newtown, PA

Recently, we had the opportunity to dine again in Newtown, PA, and we were delighted with yet another excellent meal. This time we ate at The Saloon. The name of this restaurant is a bit deceiving.  The name comes from the fact that the building was built in 1836, and over the years has taken on many functions.  The building has served as a private residence, a jail, a hospital, a church, a speakeasy, and indeed, was also once a Saloon.  Once you go inside, you see that looks (and names) can be deceiving!  Inside is a sleek, contemporary dining experience.  Once inside the doors, you will totally forget that you are in a historic building that is over 150 years old! A few months ago, Ren made an exciting discovery.  He was at a training class across from the Bridgewater Commons Mall in Bridgewater, NJ.  When he took a walk over to the mall at lunchtime, he noticed a new building under construction.  It certainly looked like a restaurant, and when a worker saw Ren wondering what it was, he confirmed that it indeed was going to be a new Cheesecake Factory.  Ren immediately texted a picture (you can see it below!) to Roy and then we both anxiously awaited for construction to be completed.  You see, we’ve always enjoyed our dinners at various locations of the Cheesecake Factory, in NJ, NY, VA among others, AND we really like going to grand openings of restaurants! Stinking Rose, San Francisco, CA

Ren and I were fortunate to enjoy a fantastic garlic themed dinner at The Stinking Rose in San Francisco. This is the brother restaurant of The Stinking Rose that we reviewed in Beverly Hills last year.  (Here’s a handy link for you, in case you missed it, or if you just want to see more yummy pictures of garlic-y food!)  For those not familiar with the restaurant, it is a garlic lovers paradise!  Literally everything on the menu has garlic of some form in it!  We really like this location just as much as the other one, but this one has a little element that sets it apart from the other: a small patio dining area upstairs in the center of the restaurant. If you are lucky enough to get there at a good time, there are three small tables up for grabs there, so plan accordingly. Also, be prepared to make reservations, because this place gets packed. After you taste the food you will understand why. (more…)

Ren and I had a truly fantastic dinner at Espetus Churrascaria, in downtown San Francisco. The restaurant is a real gem, within an area of town that does not have many gems. It is refreshing to enter Espetus Churrascaria, as it is tasteful and warm with nice dark wood accents. It feels as though you are indeed in Brazil. We can say that from personal experience of being in Brazil. Everyone who works at Espetus Churrascaria, is warm and welcoming, one of the characteristics of Latins! ;-)

Char Steakhouse, Raritan, NJ

Recently we had a great dinner at Char located in Raritan, New Jersey. Char has a unique feel to it, very dimly lit with an interesting style to it. The restaurant has a really cool outdoor fire burning which gives it a dramatic appeal. When you walk into the restaurant, you immediately see that it has a NYC feel to it.  There are a few different dining areas and a large bar in the center.  Make sure you eat within the bar area of the restaurant or the dining room in the front of the restaurant. If you sit in the front, you’ll be able to see the outside fire from your table which will really add a great feel to your experience, especially after dark.  The rear dining room is a bit too dark for our tastes and a flashlight is needed to even see the menu. The theme of the restaurant is “fire”, so there are a few displays in the restaurant that add to that theme. In addition, the preparation of their food reflects that theme. (more…)

If it is dark outside, and you are able to sit along the windows, you will be able to enjoy the view of the pretty landscaping and lighting outside of your window. It actually surprised us when we saw how much the restaurant had grown since the last time we walked by there.  There are a few different entrances to Ferraro’s, each taking you to a different atmosphere.  One entrance takes you to the lounge / bar area, which has a really sophisticated relaxing atmosphere. We all had a terrific dinner at Atlantic Manor Restaurant located in Ogdensburg, NJ. The restaurant is a blend of Spanish, Portuguese and Brazilian Rodizio style menu selections. My mother, Ria, actually grew up in Ogdensburg, right down the street from the restaurant and even went to the School across the street! All of these years of visiting relatives and friends in Ogdensburg, we never found any real notable restaurants in Ogdensburg, and more often, no restaurants at all. It was truly a surprise when our friend, Barbara K., recommended that we try a new restaurant that had opened recently and looked nice from the window in Ogdensburg. Her son lives not too far from there. Thank you, Barbara for the tip. (more…)

We had a really fantastic experience at Via 45, located in Red Bank, NJ. It was truly an experience characterizing our motto, “Good Food, Good People, Good Times”. Via 45 is a rustic BYOB Italian restaurant with a really relaxed, quaint and casual atmosphere. Our dinner was a really delicious family style dinner with several of our good friends that we definitely want to relive again sometime.  We had all attended an Art show that Via 45 hosted for our famous artist friend, Stephanie. There were 12 of us and we all sat very comfortably at a really cool wooden table in the center of the restaurant. It felt like we were in someone’s home in Tuscany and we felt right at home for sure. The entire time, we felt relaxed and never rushed and were able to take in the delicate intoxicating aromas of the food being prepared in the kitchen. (more…)

Paseo Cantina is located in Pasadena, California. We were walking around for the afternoon in Pasadena and happened to come by this place.  For days, we had been craving good authentic Mexican food and that is exactly what we were in for. It was lunch time on Sunday when we spotted them at the top of the escalator in the Paseo Colorado Mall. There happened to be a big private Sunday Brunch party with Mariachi Singers and Dancers going on. That is what drew us in. All of the festivity reminded us of all the latin weddings we’d enjoyed so much over the years.  Latins really do like to have fun! Anyway, we couldn’t  resist walking in and seeing if we could join the party. The restaurant is very big, and it has some really awesome artwork with scenes from various areas of Mexico. They also had some really interesting Mexican artifacts on display. We enjoyed looking at them all. (more…)
